Deep Six

Josh: Dan is much more aggressive than I am.

Dan: I'm a butcher and he's a whole wheat salesman.

Much is made of the mysterious symbiotic relationship of twins, how they can sense eachother's pain and finish each other's thoughts. In the case of Deep Six's twin brothers Dan and Josh Braun, age 25 and 25, it's how they finish each other's songs.

Dan: We fight a lot but we've never gotten to that Ray Davies-Dave Davies thing of fighting on stage.

Josh: We're still fighting over who's going to be Ray and who's going to be Dave.

Dan and Josh have been playing together since the age of 14. Deep Six have existed since 1982, but didn't become a full time project immediately because of the Brauns' involvement with a number of other projects. Dan played with Glenn Branca and Live Skull. Josh toured France with Lizzy Mercier Descloux. Together, the brothers were part of Circus Mort with eventual Swan Michael Gira, and TVenus with performance artist Julia Hayward and Raybeat Pat Irwin.

Their biggest brush with fame was the short-lived Spinal Root Gang, which included their father on saxophone and Madonna on vocals. In 1982 they joined the Del-Byzanteens, a band that included future Deep Six member Phil Kline and then-unknown film director Jim Jarmusch. Dan and Josh recorded one album with the Del-Byzanteens before leaving to devote their full attention to Deep Six.

Deep Six's self-titled debut album took two years to complete. Josh plays guitar and keyboards, and sings. Dan plays guitar and bass and also sings. The album lineup includes Phlil Kline on bass and guitar along with Doug Wygal and Trey Sabatelli on drums. Since the recording of the album, Peter Gammie has replaced Kline on bass. The band does not have a permanent drummer.

The Braun twins were born and raised in New York during the 1960s. Their father, Saul Braun, was a freelance writer who was published in Playboy and Esquire, while their mother, Peggy, was an assistant to a movie producer. Dinner guests at the Brauns' included Mario Puzo and Soupy Sales.

The brothers grew up fast. At age 10, they were accidentally dosed with mescaline. They attended a variety of "hippy free schools" where they did little besides play tag for five years. In the early 1970s, their parents became sex therapists and wrote a book together called ''The catalog Of Sexual Consciousness." Somehow this all led to a fascination with "The Brady Bunch."

Dan: Their house was so different from ours. We imagined the Brady house to be the perfect breeding ground for sexual perversity. Originally we saw Deep Six as the Brady Bunch taking acid and thinking they were the Manson family.

Josh: Only to have the drugs wear off.
