R&B Cadets
The R & B Cadets are a six-piece orchestra relentlessly engaged in headlong pursuit of high spirits and the ever elusive light heart. For the past five years, presenting an extensive repertoire of harmonically adventurous, verbally playful originals and drawing on an encyclopedic catalog of little known R & B gems by the likes of Eddie Bo, Bettye Swann, the Five Royals, Gene and Eunice, Huey "Piano" Smith, Lee Dorsey, Big Maybelle, and Clarence Garlow, they've offered audiences something no other band on the planet can. The Cadets blaze their own trail and then some.
Sparked by three lead vocalists--winsome, lissomely larynxed RobynPluer, Redding-inspired, leg-pullingly nonchalant John Sieger, and the Goatman himself, benignly possessed force of nature, Paul Cebar--the Cadets shamelessly go where few of their contemporaries in the root 'n' roll sweepstakes can. Buoyed by their loose-jointed rhythm section of bassest Mike Sieger and stickman Bob Schneider, and spurred on by the keyboard and saxophone work of Bob Jennings, the Cadets revel in the possibilities of singing together, mixing doo-wop with Staples-like gospel bobbing and weaving, saying yea to the rambunctious spirit of Huey Smith and the Clowns while en route to the plains of Mayfield (Curtis, that is). Add Sieger and Cebar's guitars to the brew, then stir in the exuberant Ms. Pluer on organ, glockenspiel and accordion, and you've got the real thing on your hands.
The Cadets have established themselves throughout the Midwest with a substantial and loyal fan corps in both the Twin Cities and Milwaukee areas. Their first New York jaunt in the Fall of 1983 was warmly received. You can count Nick Lowe, Los Lobos, Robert Cray, the BoDeans, NRBQ, and the Violent Femmes among the converted. And now the word must be spread. Fun on a mountiantop cannot be concelaed.
The Cadets, sedimentary rockers, groovehounds all, invite you to lay loose ana listen to this long overdue vinyl debut, Top Happy, Memphis glide and New Orleans slither, Detroit spunk and Texas stomp, New York heat and Milwaukee cool. OUT HERE IN THE MIDDLE YOU CAN SEE ALL THE EDGES.
