off the record in Minneapolis
from the Radio K library:
THE CONCEPT: No, it's not a cheesy '70s compilation from K-Tel. STUCK ON AM: OFF THE RECORD IN MINNEAPOLIS is a specially- priced double-CD set with tracks by more than 30 Minnesota bands, performed live on the AM airwaves throughout 1994 and 1995.
THE RADIO STATION: KUOM, the oldest radio station in the state, broadcasting at AM-770 from the University of Minnesota in the Twin Cities. But among Minnesota music fans, it's known and loved simply as Radio K.
The Craft: These blistering performances are culled from hours of live tapes from Radio K's acclaimed live-in-the studio show "Off the Record." Since Radio K was incarnated in late '93, "Off the Record" has become a local cult hit - a must-hear for followers of the still- mighty-and-vibrant Twin Cities rock scene. Recorded with vintage equipment in Studio K, the spontaneous and rambunctious feel of these performances has been deftly retained, though Radio K's AM filtering has been removed for CD release.
The two-disc set is divided into two halves. The Amplitude Disc contains some of the luminary artists of Minneapolis rock, noise and pop, from Balloon Guy, Cows and Arcwelder to the Hang Ups, the Spectors and Rex Daisy (who supply STUCK ON AM's title song). The Modulation Disc ventures into experimental realms with the likes of Low, Mountain Singers, Polara, February and Rhea Valentine. STUCK ON AM is the definitive Minneapolis music document circa now.
THE CAUSE: All profits from STUCK ON AM will directly benefit the Kristen Pfaff Memorial Scholarship Fund. Kristen Pfaff was a Minneapolis-based musician (best known for her work on Janitor Joe's "Big Metal Birds" and Hole's "Live Through This"), a scholar at the U of M, a political activist, a co-founder of Radio K, and a great friend to many in the music scene prior to her tragic death in June of 1994. The memorial scholarship will be awarded annually to individuals active in the arts.

93-7 Edge
Best of 1996
From one of the leading alternative stations in the country... the Twin Cities' 93-7 Edge (KEGE) is pleased to present: "The Best of 1996."
The Edge has always been about music. They wanted to make sure that a few of the artists that helped define alternative music in 1996 made it on their annual CD. (as always all profits go to charity} The Edge has been able to secure exclusive tracks from No Doubt, Poe, Dishwalla and more. Plus a live in The Edge Studio's track from Blind Melon recorded just two weeks before Shannon Hoon's untimely passing.
You will also find great unreleased tracks from some of the bands that are keeping Minneapolis at the forefront of the ever developing local music scene.
Americans for Radio Diversity Benefit
CompilationTeleconned Volume 1: We Want The Airwaves
This benefit CD contains 16 previously unreleased and hard to find tracks from performers who value diversity and creative expression in radio - you’ll recognize a lot of them as artists who sell records in your store despite low-to-no airplay and a general lack of marketability. All artists record royalties and No Alternative’s profits are being donated to Americans For Radio Diversity, a Minneapolis based activist group that formed after the takeover and shutdown of critically-acclaimed radio station Rev 105. Current ARD issues include legalizing microbroadcasting in the U.S., reforming the 1996 Telecommunications Act, Supporting community stations and educating the public in regard to their participation - and rights - in radio.
