Tim Lee
Throughout most of the eighties, Tim Lee has been just about the most prolific tunesmith in Jackson, Mississippi. Best known as a founding member of popular popsters The Wirdlbreakers, Tim has also recorded with Beat Temptation (also from Jackson) and collaborated with Howard Wuelfing in Howard and Tim's Paid Vacation, and with Matt Piucci (Rain Parade) in Gone Fishing. Always prolific, Tim found time for these side projects in betweeen seven Windbreakers releases.
Tim and Bobby Sutliff first got together in 1981 to form the Windbreakers and in early 1982 released the "Meet The Wirdlbreakers" EP. This was followed a year later by the "Any Monkey With A Typewriter" EP. By spring of 1985 Tim and Bobby's songwriting had gone into overdrive, and the critically acclaimed Terminal album was released. To promote the album, Tim put together a touring group, which did not feature Sutliff; Bobby stayed at home while the Windbreakers ventured up the east coast.
It was at about this time that Tim and the group hooked up with DB Records in Atlanta; in March 1986 DB released the album Run. Once again, Tim took the band on the road. By this time, though, Bobby Sutliff had left the Windbreakers to work on a solo record. A final Windbreakers album, A Different Sort, carne out on DB in July 1987. In a strange twist of events Tim and Bobby toured together later that year to promote A Different Sort and Bobby Sutliff's solo record Only Ghosts Remain.
At this point Tim had quite a few songs looking for a place to be heard. Many of these songs were recorded for the album WhatTime will Tell, the first Tim Lee Album for Coyote Records. All the tracks were laid down at Water Music in Hoboken, NJ in January 1988 and feature a host of guest musicians including James Mastro, Gene Holder (ex-dB's), DougWygal (of The Wygals), Faye Hunter (ex-Let's Active) and Ted Lyons (of Chris Stamey's band) amoung others. This is the first time Tim Lee has recorded an album away from Jackson, Mississippi, and a mid-winter visit to the New York area has produced a tough-sounding album, showcasing Tim's spare but elegant songwriting and his twangy, Dylanesque tenor that will excite old fans and win over many new ones.
